3.         WELCOME ADDRESS BY THE PRESIDENT OF COREN

A welcome address was presented by the President of COREN, Engr. A. A. Rabiu, FNSE, FNICE.  In his address, he said that COREN is determined to key into the rapid pace of globalization and emerging technologies around the world in the training of engineering graduates.  He emphasized that the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, has started the processes that would lead to local and international recognition of engineering qualifications from higher educational institutions in Nigeria. He added that such mutual recognition was expected to improve the quality, proficiency and mobility of COREN registered engineers.

The President recalled that in pursuit of the above goal, “in November, 2015, COREN applied to become a member of the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP) and was accepted at its General Assembly in Perth 2016. COREN, in 2018, began the process of the application for the Provisional Signatory Status of the Washington Accord (WA) under the International Engineering Alliance, lEA.

He stated that one of the many requirements for joining Washington Accord was that graduates of engineering programmes accredited by COREN must have been trained, using OBE system.  According to the President, the possible advantage of COREN registration with WA was access to employment in other signatory countries without further examinations.

4.         COURTESY CALL ON THE VICE CHANCELLOR OF NILE UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, ABUJA.

The Registrar of COREN, Engr. Prof.  Joseph O. Odigure and his team made a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor of Nile University of Nigeria, Prof. Osman Nuri Aras on Thursday, 2nd December, 2021 and was warmly received by him.  The Registrar expressed the Council’s gratitude to the University for hosting the workshop, noting the hospitality and friendliness of Nile University community. The Registrar, amongst other things, re-emphasized the need for the implementation of the Outcome Based Education (OBE) system in the Training of Engineering students and the need to train Evaluators who would serve as assessors for OBE accreditation, which as matter of fact,  necessitated the organization of the Evaluators training workshop in Abuja.

In his response, the Vice-Chancellor thanked the President, the Registrar and the Council for counting Nile University worthy to host such all-important event, stressing that the university is open to endless opportunities with COREN. He also promised to champion the implementation of the OBE’s core values and objectives.  He added that the University had built a building complex fully dedicated to the Faculty of Engineering in the University and that such gesture was geared towards improving the quality of engineering graduates in Nigeria.

The courtesy call was concluded with pleasantries and a group photograph.  The team afterwards, returned to the Conference Hall to continue with the technical sessions.
