COREN Engages AUST on Outcome-Based Education

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) today, 16 December 2025, hosted a delegation from the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), at the COREN Headquarters in Abuja.

The delegation was led by the Dean of the School of Engineering, Dr. Vitalis Anye, who provided an overview of the university’s background and recent academic developments. He explained that AUST, a Pan-African institution, had operated solely as a postgraduate university for over ten years before expanding into undergraduate programmes, with seven undergraduate programmes currently running.

According to Dr. Anye, the main purpose of the visit was to formally request COREN’s support and guidance towards the adoption and implementation of Outcome-Based Education (O.B.E) for the university’s engineering programmes. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to address issues relating to resource verification and external recognition of the undergraduate programmes.

In response, the Registrar of COREN, Engr. Prof. O.A.U. Uche FNSE, underscored the critical importance of accreditation and proper verification of engineering programmes, particularly as it affects the eligibility of graduates to practise engineering in Nigeria. He stressed that accreditation remains central to quality assurance, professional competence and the integrity of the engineering profession.

Engr. Prof. Uche further advised institutions  to expedite their accreditation processes and encouraged AUST to advance its plans ahead of the first quarter of the coming year. He also spoke on broader issues affecting engineering regulation, including funding challenges, and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to engage directly with academic institutions. He noted that sustained government support remains vital to strengthening engineering education and regulation in Nigeria. The engagement provided a platform for constructive dialogue and reaffirmed COREN’s commitment to supporting institutions in meeting required standards and promoting excellence in engineering education and practice.

COREN, CBET Meet to Deepen Collaboration

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) on Monday, 15 December 2025, received a delegation from the College of Biomedical Engineering and Technology (CBET) on a courtesy visit aimed at reviewing ongoing collaboration and strengthening the regulation and development of biomedical engineering practice in Nigeria.

The CBET delegation was led by Engr. Dr. Kennet Nkuma-Udeh, FCBET, and was received by the President of COREN, Engr. Prof. Sadiq Zubair Abubakar, FNSE, FAEng, alongside the Registrar of the Council, Engr. Prof. O.A.U. Uche, FNSE, FNICE.

During the engagement, the delegation presented a comprehensive update on activities implemented under the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between COREN and CBET. These included the establishment of joint Committees and Subcommittees, development of draft accreditation criteria for biomedical engineering training programmes, creation of a dedicated register for Biomedical and Medical Engineering practitioners, and the rollout of a pilot accreditation training programme.

The CBET team also highlighted the development of a structured Continuing Professional Development (CPD) framework involving key stakeholders, with strong emphasis on skills development, industry partnership, mentorship, and stakeholder engagement through workshops and webinars involving universities, hospitals, and industry players.

In his remarks, the President of COREN commended the progress made since the last engagement and reaffirmed COREN’s commitment to fully integrating Biomedical Engineering into the engineering family. He emphasized the importance of harmonising accreditation standards, strengthening registration and licensing processes, and aligning Biomedical Engineering programmes with global best practices to enhance international recognition.

Discussions also focused on registration eligibility, accreditation of training institutions including polytechnics and technical colleges, induction and oath-taking of graduates, and the need for a clear legal and regulatory framework in line with the COREN Act. Both parties agreed on the need for continued collaboration and technical working sessions to address emerging issues and consolidate gains. The courtesy visit reaffirmed the shared commitment of COREN and CBET to advancing Biomedical Engineering practice, capacity development, and professional regulation in Nigeria, in line with national development goals and global engineering standards.
