DISCLAIMER
The attention of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has been drawn to a publication of Punch Newspapers with the Caption “Nigeria Lacks Capacity to Probe Building Collapse – COREN” Credited to the President of COREN on Monday, 22nd July, 2024.
Mr. President actually called a press conference last week wednesday 17th July, 2024 held at COREN Head Office, Abuja in respect of the matter under discussion following the multiple occurrences of Building Collapse across the Country at the time. A two (2) sheet written and signed statement highliting the position of COREN was circulated to all invited press and few questions were entertained during the briefing. In attendance at the briefing was the Chairman of COREN-ERM&E Committee of Construction & Built Environment Sector, former Registrar, Council members, and some Head of Departments.
However, the above caption reported by Punch Newspapers may have been captured by error of non mutual understanding as it does not denote the official position of COREN. The collaborative efforts of COREN at combating the incidences of the menace of building collapse were outlined at the press conference. Particular emphasis was said on Capacity development of relevant professionals in the Construction and Built Environment to raise a critical mass of certified and licensed investigators for all types of Engineering infrastructure Failures. It was also pointed out that even though the number of engineers directly involved in cases of building collpase is very negligible due to frevalent quackery in the construction sector.
There were many other members of the press at the briefing who captured and reported the briefing correctly. COREN making concious efforts to reach out to the publishers to retract the inadvertent error in reporting.
Be rest assured that COREN will continue to promote engineering and best practices in all its aspects and ramifications at all times and will never be part of any untoward efforts to de-market professional Nigerian Engineers/Engineering practice and Engineering Institutions.
COREN take responsibility for this misinformation as we engage the source for an immediate retraction.

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Huawei Technologies for the purposes of conducting cooperation on the Nigeria ICT talents development program.
Both Parties will strive to explore areas of mutual interest in ensuring that the training courses are in line with the competency standards and needs of the sector, as well as, conduct reviews of such as at when due to meet up with the technological trends and changes in the industry.
Also, the creation of programmes, ICT talent competitions, ICT Academy, Job Fairs, etc. in order to harness potentials in the industry and provision of opportunities for these trained professionals, will be in place.
In order to guarantee the sustainability of this collaboration, there is a proposed creation of a handshake between the Academia and the Industry. Essentially, this partnership is for a firm synergy to embed solutions in academic trainings to meet real-time needs in the industry while monitoring the technological trends and proffering adequate solutions.
Thus, COREN introduces the Huawei ICT Academy to all partner Universities and is prepared to nominate them for on-boarding on the Huawei learning platform.
