COREN, CBET Meet to Deepen Collaboration

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) on Monday, 15 December 2025, received a delegation from the College of Biomedical Engineering and Technology (CBET) on a courtesy visit aimed at reviewing ongoing collaboration and strengthening the regulation and development of biomedical engineering practice in Nigeria.

The CBET delegation was led by Engr. Dr. Kennet Nkuma-Udeh, FCBET, was received by the President of COREN, Engr. Prof. Sadiq Zubair Abubakar, FNSE, FAEng, alongside the Registrar of the Council, Engr. Prof. O.A.U. Uche, FNSE, FNICE.

During the engagement, the delegation presented a comprehensive update on activities implemented under the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between COREN and CBET. These included the establishment of joint Committees and Subcommittees, development of draft accreditation criteria for biomedical engineering training programmes, creation of a dedicated register for Biomedical and Medical Engineering practitioners, and the rollout of a pilot accreditation training programme.

The CBET team also highlighted the development of a structured Continuing Professional Development (CPD) framework involving key stakeholders, with strong emphasis on skills development, industry partnership, mentorship, and stakeholder engagement through workshops and webinars involving universities, hospitals, and industry players.

In his remarks, the President of COREN commended the progress made since the last engagement and reaffirmed COREN’s commitment to fully integrating Biomedical Engineering into the engineering family. He emphasized the importance of harmonising accreditation standards, strengthening registration and licensing processes, and aligning Biomedical Engineering programmes with global best practices to enhance international recognition.

Discussions also focused on registration eligibility, accreditation of training institutions including polytechnics and technical colleges, induction and oath-taking of graduates, and the need for a clear legal and regulatory framework in line with the COREN Act. Both parties agreed on the need for continued collaboration and technical working sessions to address emerging issues and consolidate gains. The courtesy visit reaffirmed the shared commitment of COREN and CBET to advancing Biomedical Engineering practice, capacity development, and professional regulation
