OBE TRAIN-THE-TRAINERS WORKSHOP HELD AT UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN, IBADAN
REPORT OF THE WORKSHOP ON OBE TRAIN-THE-TRAINERS WORKSHOP HELD AT UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN, IBADAN FROM 31ST JANUARY“ 3RD FEBRUARY, 2022
1. Introduction
The 5th Train-the-Trainers Workshop was held at Conference Centre of University of Ibadan, Ibadan from Monday, 31st January to Thursday, 3rd February, 2022. About 120 participants from Fourteen (14) Universities were in attendance: Bells University of Technology, Ota,Covenant University, Ota,Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, University of Lagos, Lagos, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos State, Pan Atlantic University, Lekki, Lagos State, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, First Technical University, Ibadan, Oyo State, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, Ladoke Akintola University of Science & Technology, Ogbomosho and Lead City University, Ibadan, Oyo State.

3. Registration of Participants:
The first day of the workshop commenced with the registration of participants according to their Universities.
4. WELCOME ADDRESS BY THE REGISTRAR
The Registrar of COREN, Engr. Prof. Joseph Odigure thanked the resource persons, participants and everyone present for finding time to attend the workshop. In his welcome address, he highlighted the objectives of the OBE workshop and the expectations from participants and their various Universities at the end of the training.
The Registrar stated that, after almost fifty years of existence, COREN is faced with some existential realities that required a change of paradigm of the Nigerian engineering education system. Firstly, there is need for the expansion of engineering programmes in variety and number at various engineering faculties. Therefore, COREN needs to strengthen its accreditation system. Secondly, the rapid pace of globalization and emerging technologies, demands that engineering faculties meet the requirements of local employers and international job markets in the engineering and technology sectors. The Registrar also said that COREN needs to mediate in regulating the processes that will lead to local and international recognition of engineering qualifications from higher educational institutions in Nigeria. He added that such mutual recognition would improve the quality, proficiency and mobility of COREN registered engineers.

The Registrar, Engr. Prof. Joseph O. Odigure, accompanied by COREN team paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan (UI), Prof. K. O. Adebowale. The Vice Chancellor warmly welcomed COREN team to University of Ibadan and specially thanked COREN for choosing UI to host the COREN OBE Train-the-Trainers’ workshop. Thereafter, the introduction of the University Officials and COREN team was made and the Vice Chancellor invited the Registrar of COREN to speak on the objective of the courtesy call.
In response, the Registrar said that the aim of the visit was to sensitize the University Administrators to join COREN in introducing the Outcome Based Education system in their Institution, by inculcating skill-based programmes into the curricula of the university. He urged the University management to explore every opportunity possible to engage industries participation in the training of engineering students in order to acquire skills before graduation, as well as enhance their chances of becoming employers of labour after graduation. He reiterated that Bank of Industry is giving great opportunities to universities to partner with them on the above.
In response, the Vice Chancellor thanked the Registrar for such laudable project by COREN on OBE and assured that University of Ibadan, being the first University in Nigeria, 7th in Africa and now 74 years old, would do everything possible to promote OBE , not only in the engineering programmes but also in other programmesof the great University of Ibadan. He assured that the University would key-in to it,as well as ensure full implementation of OBE.
The courtesy call was concluded with a group photograph at the Vice Chancellor’s office and the COREN team proceeded to the conference centre to continue the workshop.
