REPORT OF THE OBE TRAIN-THE-TRAINERS WORKSHOP HELD AT AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY, ZARIA FROM 19TH – 23RD SEPTEMBER, 2021
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The OBE Train-the-TrainerS Workshop was held from Monday 20th to Thursday 23rd September, 2021, at the postgraduate school auditorium of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. About fifty-six (56) participants from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Bayero University, Kano, Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Kaduna, Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto, University of Jos, Plateau State and the Bank of Industry (BOI) were in attendance.

2.0 COREN TEAM

The first day of the workshop started with the registration of participants according to their universities, followed by opening ceremony and introduction of participants. Thereafter, Engr. S.O. Menjor presented the Registrar’s Welcome Address.
3. Highlights of the Registrar’s Welcome Address
The Registrar, Engr. Prof. Joseph Odigure, duly represented by Engr. S. O. Menjor, explained that the aim of the OBE Regional Train-the-Trainers’ Workshop for University Implementors was “to prepare participants to acquire the knowledge and skill of OBE and to be able to train others on the principles and implementations of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) in Nigeria Universities”. He stated that the goal of the workshop would be considered achieved if, at the end of the workshop, participants were able to:
- Explain the purposes, assumptions and principles of OBE.
- Compare and contrast between conventional and OBE approaches of education.
- Adapt current curriculum to OBE approach for an Engineering Programme.
- Implement OBE procedure for an Engineering Programme.
- Train others on the theory and implementation of OBE in an Engineering Programme,
- Inculcate in others the culture of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) on setting clear standards for observable and measurable learning outcomes.
He also said that the participants for the workshop from each University included, the Director Academic Planning Unit, Dean/Deputy Dean (Engineering Faculty/School), Faculty Examination Officer, Head of Departments, Departmental Exam Officers, etc, who would be expected to train others in their universities.
4. Courtesy Call on the Dean of Engineering and the Vice Chancellor of ABU
COREN Team paid a Courtesy call on the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering who gladly welcomed the team and proceeded to present the team to the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Kabiru Bala.
The Registrar’s Representative highlighted the objectives of the workshop to the Vice Chancellor.
In response, the Vice Chancellor thanked COREN for the well-articulated plan to move Engineering to a higher height through a gradual transition from traditional Education in Engineering to an Outcome-Based System. He informed COREN that ABU housed about thirteen Engineering programmes and assured that the University would do everything within its power to support and promote the implementation of OBE system within and across the nation.

6. Closing
