OBE WORKSHOP FOR MEMBERS OF COUNCIL AND E &T COMMITTEE MEMBERS

 

REPORT ON WORKSHOP FOR MEMBERS OF COUNCIL AND E &T COMMITTEE MEMBERS HELD ON MONDAY, 8TH MARCH, 2021

1.         Introduction

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, organised a Workshop on the Outcome Based Education (OBE) in Engineering Programmes in Nigerian Universities, for members of Council and Education and Training (E&T) Committee Members on Monday, 8th March, 2021.

2.         Commencement of the Workshop

The Workshop commenced at 10.10 a.m with a National Prayer and was attended by twenty six (26) Council and E & T Committee Members.

The attendance list is presented as APPENDIX I to this report. The photographs taken on the occasion are presented in APPENDIX II.

3.Introductory Remarks By The Registrar

The Registrar, Engr. Prof. Joseph Odigure, on behalf of the President, welcomed Council and the E & T Committee Members and thanked them for finding time to attend the workshop despite their busy schedules.

The Registrar clearly stated that the activities of OBE, especially in the Nigerian institutions, are not limited to the Universities and that the E&T Committee had conceptualized a roadmap of ensuring that the Universities, Polytechnics, Technical Colleges, Organisations and Ministries collaborate in the actualization of the Outcome Based Education system.

He thereafter, introduced the President and called on him to deliver his welcome Remarks.

 

4.         Welcome Remarks by the President

The President and the Chairman of the Workshop, Engr. A. A. Rabiu, FNSE, welcomed everyone present and then presented his Welcome Remarks.

4.1       Highlights of the President’s Welcome Remarks:

  1. He gave a brief review on COREN Accreditation mandate.
  2. Journey so far on COREN’s drive for OBE implementation.
  • Urged members to have a holistic approach to the workshop for better understanding of OBE and its implementation strategy.

5.         Introduction of Paper Presenters

The E & T Chairman introduced the Resource Persons invited for Paper presentation on OBE as follows:

6.         Resolutions

At the end of the Workshop, the Chairman, Engr. A. A. Rabiu, FNSE, summarized the resolutions as follows:

  1. Urged all Members from the Academia and Industry to be fully committed to the pursuit of OBE implementation in Nigeria.
  2. COREN would collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure that students on SIWES and Industrial Attachment are given adequate hands-on-experience and be properly supervised while undergoing the training.
  • COREN would commence pilot Accreditation exercise on OBE with Universities that are ready.
  1. COREN will enforce the full implementation of the OBE Manual when the programme commences.
  2. COREN and other stakeholders to support the Engineering Training School project by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE)

7.         Chairman’s Closing Remarks

The President/Chairman once again, appreciated members of council and the E&T committee members for a successful workshop.  He said that COREN would kick-start OBE accreditation with the Universities that are fully ready.   He thanked the President of ACEN and others who had been working for a whole week at the COREN Headquarters, Abuja. He also thanked the paper presenters for the good job done.

Finally, he wished members success as they continue with other Council’s and Committee’s assignments in the days ahead.

8.         Vote of Thanks

The Vice President, Engr. C.U. Nwoji, on behalf of the President, thanked the Registrar and the Registry staff who made the workshop colourful.  He thanked all participants for creating time to attend and for contributing robustly to the deliberations of the workshop.

9.         Closing                                                                                                            

The workshop closed at 2.30 pm with a group photograph by members.
