S/N MATTERS ARISING (2012) ACTION TAKEN BY THE UNIVERSITY IN 2017
a. Classrooms are few in numbers and unkempt. We noticed slight improvement, still unkempt
b. The general Workshop for the Faculty was adequate but to be improved upon. There is improvement
c. The drawing studio to be expanded. We noticed improvement
d. Technologists are inadequate in most laboratories and most of them are not registered with COREN. There is improvement in some departments.
e. Staff promotion has been delayed, some have not been promoted for up to five years. Staff promotion observed to be going on smoothly.
f. No functional equipment in the laboratories mostly in Chemical Lab. Equipment are installed and put in use.
g. Lack of power supply, there is need for a generating set to power equipment especially in the workshop. The students have not used some of the machines up to 3 years. Standby power is still a major problem.
h. Staff are not sponsored for Conferences. There is a remarkable improvement
I. Staff to student ratio is low in most dept, there is need to employ more lecturers We noticed little improvement but majority of the department, the ratio is still low.
j. No first Aid and fire extinguisher in some laboratories. This is Available
k There is no background subject for students taking Biomedical Engineering in the Agricultural Engineering Department. Action has been taken
l In the Civil Department, there is no hydraulic laboratory for practical work. Action has been taken on this.
m Staff offices are in bad shape with obsolete furniture, and no dedicated personal computer given to staff. There is remarkable improvement in this direction.
n Existing staff development programme is not quite adequate. There is noticeable improvement

The Vice Chancellor was briefed with the following observations of the team on the current visit which was categorized as strength and weakness.

Strength

  1. Staffing: The academic staff is commendable. However, the University should employ more permanent staff for the Faculty as resources are been expanded.
  2. Staff Development: We observed that the staff development scheme particularly in sponsorship to Conferences and acquisition of higher degree is in place. We recommend improvement in this area.
  • Admission Requirement: We noticed that admission requirement is followed strictly. Every student admitted made minimum requirement by Jamb. This is commendable.
  1. Workshops and Laboratories: There are equipment and machines in the Workshops and Laboratories but underutilized mostly in Agbani Campus.
  2. The Technologists in Mechanical Engineering and Met/Mat department, although not adequate in number, are very knowledgeable and committed to work.

Weaknesses

  1. Inadequacy of non-academic staff in number was noticed and majority of them were not registered with COREN.
  2. Maintenance of facilities: We observed the need for maintenance of the existing facility. We recommend the functional maintenance culture should be inculcated in the system.
  • Funding: We observed the limited funding in the system. We recommend where possible to improve the funding for the various departments to enable them function optimally.
  1. Efforts should be doubled to link the University with national grid for electric power supply. We recommend the purchase of some standby generating sets to address the problem of power supply.
  2. Laboratory manual should be developed for all the laboratories for proper utilization of equipment. Where some new equipment are available they are not fully installed for use and training purpose.
  3. The sanitation of the Campus is a general problem.
  • RECOMMENDATION

It was recommended by the team that all Engineering departments should move to the main Campus as soon as possible in order to better coordinate the different degree programmes that are unavoidably related.

  • OVERALL MANAGEMENT

The team noted the existing cordial relationship from top to bottom and vice visa among the staff in the Faculty visited. The team also noted that without this relationship, no meaningful development can take place and therefore advise that it should be maintained.
